The Carquinez Bridge actually consists of parallel bridge structures, the original constructed in 1927 and the second constructed in 1958. Seismic problems necessitated the replacement of the original span. The replacement was the nation’s first suspension bridge built in 35 years. The 3,465 foot long structure was constructed under an aggressive schedule and features a pedestrian and bicycle path. The superstructure is a steel orthotropic deck section which was fabricated in Japan and shipped in three ocean going barges.
Signet provided quality control welding inspection and testing services for this new bridge after construction had already begun, staffing the project with certified AWS/ASNT inspectors and technicians. The scope included mechanical testing of welding procedures and visual welding inspection of steel pipe piles. Inspection work was performed to both AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.5 codes and all reports were reviewed and approved by the project Quality Control Manager.
