The Genentech Cell Culture Plant 2 project included the construction of mega facility with three new buildings totaling 380,000 square feet, utilizing 7,300 tons of structural steel and the modernization of two existing building structures. The largest structure, Building 9, consisted of SMRF and braced frames, four levels of concrete slab-on-metal decking, a CIP concrete basement and 12,000 cubic yards of concrete within the mat foundation. In addition to the existing capacity, the new manufacturing facility is configured with eight 25,000-liter fermentation tanks. At the time of its completion, the Vacaville operation was the largest biotechnology manufacturing plant of its kind in the world and received an award for California Construction Best of the Best Industrial/ Manufacturing Project in Northern California.
Signet provided special inspection and materials testing services for this project included soils/AC testing and observation, moisture density, compaction curves, in-place density tests of soils by the nuclear method, concrete slump and air content for fresh concrete, reinforced concrete, Shotcrete, post tension concrete slab, grout, onsite and shop structural steel, fireproofing, floor flatness, proof-load and torque testing of anchor bolts.
