The Village at Northstar
Project Description
The Village at Northstar project revitalized a once vibrant highly-ranked ski area. The design was inspired by the grand lodge architecture of the American West’s National Parks. It features native stones and timber, with cobblestone streets. It was named the first LEED Certified resort village upon its completion.
The construction of Iron Horse North and South made up Phase 1. Phase 2 included the construction of The Great Bear Lodge, with 28 residences. The Lodge includes a skier service building, restaurants, day care, a theater and retail space. Phases 1 and 2 were performed under an aggressive construction timeline. Both phases were completed within the first 24 months of a planned ten year build-out.
The focal point of the Village is a beautiful outdoor ice rink. Surrounded by outdoor fire pits, the rink serves as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
Design consisted of driven pile foundation system supporting four and five-story structural steel frame incorporating braced and moment frame connections, composite slab-on-deck with a multi-story concrete parking structure.
Services Provided
MatriScope provided a variety of services related to the construction of many of the buildings, the ice rink, parking structure and roadways, including geotechnical engineering, pile driving, earthwork observation and testing, building department code compliance inspections, and Caltrans civil and electrical inspections. They also provided special inspections and materials testing related to concrete, masonry, epoxy dowels, structural steel and fireproofing.
